I Make Art Rooted in the Natural World
I live on a small farm in the Lake Michigan countryside of southwest Michigan, where vineyards, open meadows, quiet country roads, and the shoreline provide endless inspiration.
I've always been drawn to the things many people overlook—a weathered piece of driftwood on the beach, a twisting vineyard vine, the texture of an old tree, a mullein leaf, or a wildflower blooming beside a country road. Those quiet discoveries have shaped both my photography and the art I create.
Most of my photographs are taken during ordinary walks around my farm, along a Lake Michigan beach, or down a quiet country road. Something catches my eye—a shape, a texture, a pattern, or the way light falls across a simple leaf—and I stop to capture it. That's where nearly every collection begins.
From there, I play. I explore patterns, symmetry, and composition, often creating a dozen or more variations before one finally makes me smile. That's when I know I've found it.
Creativity has always been part of my life. I grew up in a family of artists, surrounded by people who looked at the world with curiosity and imagination. Looking back, I realize that way of seeing became part of me too.
My work often begins with something that captures my imagination—a photograph I've taken, a natural form, a pattern, or another visual idea that invites exploration.
